Neymar’s father will not help Alves
The Brazilian defender was convicted of rape after sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in 2022.
Neymar da Silva Santos said in a statement on behalf of his family that they financially supported Alves during his trial.
However, the support stops there when the Barcelona Provincial Court ruled Alves guilty of rape.
“For us, for my family, this matter is over. Full stop,” Neymar da Silva Santos said.
“With the Spanish court ruling for his conviction, there’s speculation and an attempt to associate my name and my son’s to a matter that is not within our reach any longer.”
The 40-year-old Alves was sentenced to four years and six months in prison.
Neymar’s father added that he hopes Alves “can find all the answers he looks for in his own family.”
However, he admitted that he helped Alves “without any link to any lawsuit.”
Neymar and Alves were teammates at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and the Brazil national team.
Alves granted bail
Alves was granted bail by the Spanish Court.
In addition, the court agreed to their plea before laying out the terms and conditions for his bail.
The condition includes Alves surrendering his Brazilian and Spanish passports.
The court also barred the beleaguered footballer from leaving Spain.
He is still in custody since being arrested in January 2023.
Legendary status no more
Meanwhile, Barcelona officially removed Alves from its designation as a legendary player.
Alves first played for Sevilla before heading to Barcelona in 2008.
The Barcelona star helped the club win three Champions Leagues.
He rejoined the club in 2021 before leaving again a year later.
