End of Xavi Era
Xavi, 43, officially announced his future resignation following Barcelona’s 5-3 loss to Villareal.
However, the Barca legend said he arrived at his decision before the Villareal game.
“I would like to announce that I will not remain Barça manager beyond the end of this season,” Xavi said.
“I decided to leave a few days ago, but I think now is the right time to announce it to help reduce the tension that exists around the club.”
“A change of dynamic is needed.”
Xavi took over the coaching post in November 2021, replacing Ronald Koeman in the process.
The former Barca midfielder steered to a Spanish Super Cup championship and La Liga title.
However, the club failed to advance past the Champions League group stage.
Barcelona are still reeling from their Copa del Rey quarterfinal loss against Athletic Bilbao this week.
Xavi previously said he would step down from his coaching duties if he didn’t meet his expectations for Barca.
“So, as a Barça fan, thinking of the club’s best interests, and the players, I think it’s the right decision.”
“No one is bigger than the club, and I am a supporter above all. I love this club.”
No turning back
Xavi said he would not change his mind, regardless of the success that Barcelona could get before the end of their campaign.
However, Xavi believes that the Blaugrana will hoist a trophy this season.
“I am more optimistic than ever with this change of dynamic,” he said.
“We’ll go for La Liga. It’s very difficult, but we will fight.”
Xavi said he has yet to speak with his players about his decision.
“I have not spoken to the players about it, I saw how down they were today, and I will talk to them tomorrow, and that’s one of the reasons for it.”
