Julen Lopetegui: Sevilla sack embattled gaffer after UCL debacle

Sevilla FC are now looking for a new manager at the Sánchez Pizjuán touchlines as they are now the second LaLiga club to make a change this 2022-23 season.

That is because Julen Lopetegui has been relieved of his duties on October 5, just less than two months into the season, due to a string of disappointments both domestically and in Europe. He follows Francisco into the jobless zone a day after Elche were beaten by Rayo Vallecano, leaving the Alicante outfit bottom of the league table.

The 1-4 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund in their Group G clash at the UEFA Champions League left the club with no other option but to sack the former Spain boss, who ended his three-year stay with the Andalusian giants in humiliating fashion.

Lopetegui brought the Europa League in his first season there. He eventually led them to consecutive fourth place finishes at LaLiga.

However, his job security has been a contentious topic at Nervión. The club has found it hard to replace centerback duo Diego Carlos and Jules Koundé, who left for different teams in the most recent summer transfer window.

As a result, the Sevilistas lost four of their first seven LaLiga matches, conceding 13 goals. They currently find themselves in the relegation zone. Over in Europe, Sevilla are third in their group at the Champions League.

Lopetegui left Sevilla with 90 wins in 170 games.
