La Liga Recap Week 33: Real Madrid hands on the title after Osasuna win

Osasuna 1-3 Real Madrid: Benzema missed double penalties but Los Blancos sealed away victory

La Liga Recap Week 33. Real Madrid has one hand on the La Liga title, as they seal a 3-1 victory at Osasuna, despite Karim Benzema’s double failure from the penalty spot.

The stunning comeback to win 3-2 at Sevilla was an inspiration, but should not be repeated, Los Blancos was well aware of that. And Carlo Ancelotti’s side immediately pulled an impressive performance at El Sadar.

David Alaba struck after 12 minutes, but Ante Budimir equalized in no time. Marco Asensio restored the lead for Madrid at the 45th minute. But it was La Liga’s current top scorer, Benzema left the away fans’ jaw drop with 2 penalties missed, both saved by Sergio Herrera.

But it’s okay for Madrid because Vinicius Jr. was there to shine with another assist as he rolled wide on the counter before teeing up Lucas Vazquez, who then finished sublimely into the bottom-left corner to seal the win.

Ancelotti’s team is now edging closer to lifting the La Liga trophy.

Who’s still on track for the title race?

Defeating Osasuna earned Real Madrid 3 points as they now have 78 points after MD33. Atletico Madrid has been long gone and became the former La Liga champion with only 61 pts after MD33. Sevilla failed shortly with 60 points while still having one game in hand and could no longer compete with Madrid.

Even with a 6-game winning streak for the rest of the season, Lopetegui’s side will still equal the current Madrid’s pts (78) and worst H2H (defeated twice by Madrid this season).

Barcelona, probably, can still be in it with 60 games after MD31 however, if the Catalan needs to win all the games left in the league, while hoping that Madrid fails to do the same.
