However, Los Blancos’ win and their city rival’s slip-up changed the standings order.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side now reclaimed their second place with three points ahead of Atletico.
Meanwhile, Sociedad remained in top-four despite being held by Girona 2-2 at home. La Real scored twice early in the first half but then let the visitors got two back before the break.
Imanol Alguacil’s men only had to dealt with 10-man Girona when Oriol Romeu got sent off in the 87th minute, but the injury time was not enough for the home side to find the winning goal.
