Matchday 34 Highlights

Of course, the Catalan derby at RCDE Stadium between Espanyol and Barca was the highly anticipated one last weekend, as it could decide the title.

And Robert Lewandowski did not let Culers down when he scored a brace as Barca cruised past the city rivals to be crowned La Liga champions – their 27th in the league history.

Barca’s top scorer Lewandowski scored twice during first half, while Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde also contributed to the four-goal lead.

The Home side got two back with goals from Javi Puado and Joselu but the Catalan derby ended up with the title won for the league top clubs with four games to play.

Atletico Madrid had also drop points after being defeated Elche and Real Madrid’s 1-0 win against Getafe did not effect much with Barca already earned three points at Espanyol.

Los Colchoneros fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat at relegated Elche on Sunday, confirming that Diego Simeone’s side are no longer mathematically in contention to win La Liga and showed that bottom-side could strike back.

However, Los Blancos’ win and their city rival’s slip-up changed the standings order.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side now reclaimed their second place with three points ahead of Atletico.

Meanwhile, Sociedad remained in top-four despite being held by Girona 2-2 at home. La Real scored twice early in the first half but then let the visitors got two back before the break.

Imanol Alguacil’s men only had to dealt with 10-man Girona when Oriol Romeu got sent off in the 87th minute, but the injury time was not enough for the home side to find the winning goal.
