Joining Madrid a ‘no brainer’ for Bellingham

The 20-year-old signed with Los Blancos last summer from Borussia Dortmund.

Bellingham said the club’s long-term future played a huge factor in his decision to head to Bernabeu.

“I had good chats with clubs including Dortmund [about a new contract],” he said

“My family were great in helping me chew up that information because it’s difficult while you are still in the season to take in the information and process it and still have to play at the weekend or in the Champions League.”

“I had conversations with other teams but when Madrid came in it was a no-brainer really.”

“The size of the club, the project, the plan going forward, the chance to play with such amazing players. I just jumped at it. That’s why I made my decision.”

Stellar season with Madrid

Bellingham has scored 20 goals in his debut season for Madrid, including four in the Champions League.

However, injuries and suspension have disrupted the midfielder’s rhythm this year, resulting in only three goals since January.

“The injury killed my rhythm,” he said.

“I felt a bit of pain, finally got over the feeling, played Valencia [first game back] and got suspended [after being sent off]. It’s affected my rhythm. Early in the season I felt clear about what I was doing.

“But in the last games my role has changed [dropping into attacking midfield], maybe I lost that effectiveness, I have to regain it, I’m happy to take the criticism on the chin and I’m happy to do that.”
