Valencia 1-0 Barcelona: Lewandowski’s late goal keep hope up for Barca

Robert Lewandowski’s late strike in the 93rd minute earned Barcelona not only three points, but also kept the hope on this season.

Thrashed out of Champions League after the defeat against Bayern Munich, Barcelona needs La Liga to save this season from disaster.

Xavi started Ansu Fati and Ousmane Demebele in attack with Lewandowski up front. The Catalan’s number 10 had the best chance in the first half and had one goal ruled out for offside.

Samuel Lino from Valencia did put the ball in the net of Ter Stegen, but VAR ruled his goal as Marcos Andre handled the ball in the build up.

It took Barca till injury’s time to win the game by Lewandowski’s 93rd-minute strike.

The win sealed Barcelona’s 10th league victory with 10 wins and 1 draw, 1 lose. 31 points out of a possible 36 so far has been excellent for Xavi and his squad. Beating Valencia at Estadio Mestalla also put Barca level with Real Madrid who beat them earlier in the El Clasico.

Los Blancos needed a win or at least a draw to not lose their place at top of the standings again, to Barcelona.

Vinicius Junior opened the scoring for Los Blancos against a stubborn Girona side and but it was not enough to deliver three more points for the Spanish champions.

Cristhian Stuani converted a late penalty to earn the visitors a point that they will feel as though they deserved.

It was the battle between the top and the bottom in 2022/23 La Liga Standings. But Girona was fearless again the reigning champions.

The away even had the best chance of the opening first half when Yangel Herrera stroke straight to the crossbar powerfully.

It took Los Blancos more than an hour to break the deadlock as Vinicius Jr was the scorer, from the assist by on-form Fede Valverde.

Vinicius got the finishing touch on the opening goal, but Fede Valverde was so important in it coming. The midfielder did well on the right to force his way into a position in the box from where he centred and Vinicius was well placed beneath the crossbar to tap into an open goal.

But Girona didn’t let up and there were given a chance to level in possibly controversial circumstances. 

Marco Asensio, who had his best chance with a close range shot stopped minutes earlier, conceded a penalty for a handball in his own box, though replays showed that the ball had hit his chest before hitting his arm. Cristhian Stuani stepped up to convert, meaning he has now scored in each of this last three appearances against Real Madrid.

A bit of late drama took place in the injury time as Toni Kroos saw a yellow card and was sent off. This is Kroos’ first red card ever in some what more than 700 games he’s played.

Real Madrid will face Rayo Vallecano, next matchday without their maestro on 7th of November.
