Florentino Perez and Joan Laporta resign from the the Spanish football federation

Florentino Perez and Joan Laporta resigned from the board of directors of the Spanish football federation as the leaders of La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are no longer in charge of the top party.

Florentino Perez and Joan Laporta resigned from the Spanish football federation.

The decision was announced on Wednesday (local time) by Perez and Laporta, according to Spanish outlet El Confidencial. The reasons, which were not revealed in detail, were written in a letter from two bosses to the president of RFEF.

According to the report, Perez and Laporta have expressed their respect and gratitude but have also stated their intention to avoid any interference in the electoral process of the RFEF, which still does not have a start date. The report claims no conflict or disagreement between the two clubs and the RFEF but rather a desire to maintain a cordial and constructive relationship.

Is Spanish football in crisis?

The resignation came at the wrong time, as the relationship between Real Madrid vs Barca and Barca vs RFEF is tense.

Los Blancos’ president refused to attend the customary lunch before the first La Liga 2023/24’s El Clasico earlier in October. Meanwhile, Barca have been under controversy over the payments made by Barcelona to a former vice-president of the referees’ committee3.

However, the report by El Confidencial insists that the decision to leave the board of directors of the RFEF is not related to any of these matters but rather to a gesture of respect and transparency towards the RFEF and its president.

The RFEF is currently being run by a management committee led by interim president Pedro Rocha following Luis Rubiales’ resignation in September.

Rubiales resigned after coming under mounting pressure for kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips without consent following Spain’s Women’s World Cup final win over England in August.
