FC Barcelona vice president of finance Eduard Romeu resigns from his position, citing professional reasons.

Romeu resigns as Barcelona VP
The club confirmed this in an official statement.
Multiple reports revealed that Barcelona’s current economic woes became a motivating factor behind Romeu’s departure.
“FC Barcelona hereby announces that Mr Eduard Romeu, vice-president of its Economic Area, has presented his resignation to President Joan Laporta due to the position’s incompatibility with full-time dedication to his professional work,” the statement read.
“President Laporta has accepted the resignation and expresses his gratitude for Mr Romeu’s work as the head of the Economic Area, which has focused on developing a feasibility plan that was implemented during this mandate and which has turned around the institution’s financial situation. A full explanation will be given in public shortly.”
The resignation came amid the Catalan club’s financial turmoil this season.
Romeu becomes the latest Barcelona executive who stepped down from his duties under chief Joan Laporta.
Sporting director Jordi Cruyff and director of football Mateu Alemany also resigned last year.
Barca coach Xavi Hernandez will also resign after the season ends.
“When we started this it seemed that nobody could save it. But the courage that Laporta has given us has allowed us to fight,” Romeu said.
“To see a great Barcelona, we still need to make complex decisions. But there is still that final point that we must reach and we will follow our path with the same strength.”
Under Romeu, Barcelona improved its financial situation thanks to cutbacks and revenue increases.
However, the Blaugrana remain around €200 million ($218.8m) over their LaLiga-imposed annual spending limit of €204m.
