De Jong suffers another ankle injury

The club confirmed that De Jong, 26, sustained a right sprained ankle.

The Dutch midfielder left the game before halftime after contesting the ball with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde.

De Jong also injured his ankle during Barcelona’s ongoing game against Athletic Club at San Mamés.

It is the third time this season De Jong has dealt with issues with his ankle.

“Tests carried out on Monday have confirmed that first team player Frenkie de Jong has a right ankle sprain. He is unavailable and his recovery will determine his availability,” Barcelona said in a statement.

De Jong came back in the first leg of Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain after he recovered from a ligament injury.

“The injuries have been a bit unlucky,” De Jong said before Barcelona’s El Clasico fixture.

“The first one someone fell on my ankle which left me with a syndesmosis thing which is a tough injury and then I had an injury on the same ankle again [in March] which was a tough blow.”

However, ESPN reported De Jong will suit up in this summer’s European Championship in Germany.
