Atletico Madrid’s Morata out for 3 weeks due to knee injury
Atletico Madrid skipper Alvaro Morata will be sidelined for three weeks after suffering a knee injury.
The 33-year-old sustained a bone contusion and sprained the internal lateral ligament of his right knee during their 1-0 defeat by Sevilla.
Morata limped off the field during the 46th minute of the match.
“On Monday morning he underwent an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury… He is awaiting further treatment,” the club said in a statement.
Morata will miss the first leg of the Champions League against Inter Milan on Feb. 20, but he will try to return in the second leg.
The Spanish star confirmed on his Instagram story that he did not sustain any serious diagnosis.
“Thank God it’s nothing serious, thank you very much for the positive messages,” he wrote.
The Spanish striker is the joint-top scorer in the Champions League this season with five goals from six matches.
Morata is also Atlético’s leading scorer in La Liga this season.
He has scored 13 times in 22 appearances.
