Courtois sustains another knee injury

The Belgium international will miss another four to six weeks of action.

Courtois, 31, missed the entire 2023-24 season after he tore his ACL on his left knee in August.

ESPN reported that Courtois left Tuesday’s training session in tears.

Courtois was expected to return in Real Madrid’s Champions League quarterfinals matchup against Manchester City.

“Following tests carried out today, Thibaut Courtois has been diagnosed with a ruptured internal meniscus in his right knee,” Madrid said in a statement on Tuesday. “The injury occurred during today’s training session. The injury will be monitored.”

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said he expected Courtois and Brazil defender Eder Militao to return in April.

Militao also sustained an ACL tear in August.

“They have started to work with the group, completing normal training sessions,” Ancelotti told a press conference on Friday.

“I think they will be able to make it (against City). In fact, the idea is that they will be available on March 31st, for the LaLiga match against Athletic Bilbao, but we won’t risk anything, that’s more than clear.”

An established goalkeeper

Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018.

In his time with The Blues, he won Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

The veteran goalkeeper helped Real secure a record-extending 14th European title with a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the 2022 Champions League final.
