Diego Simeone’s side aimed for the third victory in four matches at the start of the Spanish top-flight when they host struggling Sevilla at the Metropolitano, at La Liga 2023/24 Matchday 4.
However, Los Colchoneros would have to wait a bit longer as the severe weather forced the anticipated game to be postponed.
Reason for the Atletico-Sevilla match to be postponed
Storms and heavy rainfall, which the State Meteorological Agency had expected, hit the Spanish capital.
The red alert was activated, causing the postponement shortly before the scheduled time for the fixture.
Atletico’s Metropolitano was flooded, and so were the streets of Madrid. Walking around and playing football was even more challenging under this significantly lousy weather.
Bad news for Simeone’s side, good news for Sevilla
Though the postponement was not the best thing to come, it hit great timing for Sevilla, who failed to score a single point since the start of the La Liga 2023/24 season.
The Andalusians are the only club in the league to have earned a single point so far.
Meanwhile, Atletico were frustrated to discontinue their great run after 2W 1D, with their latest victory being a heavy crash at Rayo Vallecano with seven goals past the host.
The league table
Atletico is sitting fourth in the standings, playing one game short, while Sevilla is in the bottom with zero points from the previous three matches.
After the international break, Atletico will visit Valencia, and Sevilla will host Las Palmas.
