This was Real Madrid‘s second bad news in a week, having lost Thibaut Courtois to a ruptured cruciate ligament in training.
What happened – Militao injured
The Brazilian defender was featured in Los Blancos’ first La Liga 2023/24 fixture, traveling to Athletic Bilbao.
Rodrygo and new boy Jude Bellingham scored in the first half to clinch last season’s second runner their first victory of the new season.
However, Militao’s injury brought an unpleasant end to the supposed-to-be-exciting evening.
Militao went to engage Sancet right at the start of the second half, but in his attempt to stop the Athletic Club player, he dug his left leg into the San Mames turf, and his knee broke.
The defender was in apparent agony as he lay on the ground and could not stand on his own feet. Two doctors supported the player on his way out, and he could be seen in tears, having realized the seriousness of his injury.
Real Madrid’s statement on Militao’s injury
Real Madrid have made it official in a statement:
“Following tests carried out on our player Eder Militao; he has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days”.
Ancelotti is in trouble with defenders
The injury leaves Ancelotti with three healthy centre-backs: Alaba, Rudiger, and Nacho. The three will have to rotate and share all the minutes over the next few months, in which Militao cannot participate.
The departure of Rafa Marin and Pablo Ramon from Castilla also leaves no clear path for ‘promotion’ from the reserve team.
Los Blancos fans will have to see if Madrid decide to explore the market, as with the goalkeeping position, although the urgency is different from with Courtois.
